Seven Signs You Need To Get Your Dog To The Vet

If you have a dog, you know that they can be prone to illnesses and medical issues, but when should you seek medical attention? There are some signs and symptoms that could indicate a serious problem and that warrant a trip to the veterinarian immediately.

Seven symptoms and signs that should not be ignored are:

1. Obvious trauma. If your dog experiences trauma, such as bleeding, an injury, or being hit by a car, take them in to the vet immediately. Even if you don't think your pet is injured, they could have experienced some trauma internally and should be checked-out.
2. Seizure activity. If you observe or suspect seizure activity in your canine, seek medical attention. Seizures can often be a sign of something else, such as poisoning, and merit immediate action.
3. Persistent vomiting. Dogs throw up sometimes, but persistent vomiting could by a symptom of something far worse. Take your pet in to see the vet before they become dehydrated or suffer further complications.
4. Chronic cough. If you notice that your dog has a chronic or persistent cough, take your pet in to be examined. While this could be nothing more than a doggy-cold, it could be a sign of kennel cough or heartworm and is worth pursuing.
5. Suspected exposure to poison. Take your dog to the vet if they have been exposed to toxic substances or if you suspect poisoning. If your pet has been sniffing around a garage where antifreeze might be or if you see them near rodent-bait, take them for an evaluation and possible antidote for the toxicity.
6. Difficulty breathing. If your dog shows difficulty breathing or is laboring to breathe, take them to the vet right away. Strange noises when they breathe or if you notice that your dog puffs out his lips when breathing are further signs of a respiratory problem. A dog can only last around three minutes without air before suffering brain damage, so don't delay getting to the veterinary provider.
7. Abdominal abnormality. If you notice that your dog has a distended abdomen or apparent abdominal pain, get to the emergency vet. Also, if your pet demonstrates difficulty moving or an inability to move, these are other signs that should not be ignored.
