How To Treat Burns On Your Dog

Blog

As a pet owner, the last thing you want to happen is for your dog to get burned. However, accidents happen and when they do there are some things you will need to do quickly in order to provide relief for your pet. However, you may not know the dos and don'ts of a situation like this. The correct way to treat a burn in your dog will be outlined below.

Your first instinct may be to apply ointment, butter, margarine or some form of salve to the burned area. This should never be done as it will not help. Here is what you should do depending on the nature of the burn.

How To Treat Liquid Or Hot Object Burns

Restrain your dog as quickly as possible since they are likely to be agitated. The best place to apply restraint is near a consistent stream of running water. This may be in a bathtub or at an outdoor pipe. Turn on the tap and apply a continuous stream of water to the burned area to cool it. Once you have finished flushing the area, apply a cold compress for at least twenty minutes.  A frozen bag of anything you have in the fridge or ice wrapped in a towel will make a good cold compress for this situation.

How To Treat Chemical Burns

You will need to wear gloves to avoid being burned as well. Remove any clothing or collar that has been contaminated by the chemical. Place the area under running water for at least twenty minutes. Wash the area with some mild shampoo once it has been flushed. Finally, you can add a tablespoon of baking soda to a pint of water and apply it to the area to soothe the burn.

How To Treat Electrical Burns

In the case of electrical burns, the first thing you should do is unplug the offending power source and get your dog safely away from any electrical wires. Flush the burned area with water for twenty minutes and apply a cold compress for about thirty minutes.

The measures outlined above will provide quick relief for your dog and will help lessen the impact of a burn as quickly as possible. It is important to be observant in a situation like this and examine the burn thoroughly once you have soothed it. This will help you to determine if you will need veterinary assistance.
